My Favorite Procreate Brushes (Great for Beginners)

When you're getting started with Procreate it can be awfully daunting. There's loads of features to use and a million things you can do. In this post I want to talk about some of my favorite brushes. Some of these brushes are standard to the app, some I have made myself and some I have downloaded from a third party.

PRELOADED PROCREATE BRUSHES

Let's talk about the standard ones first. Procreate comes preloaded with almost 200 brushes when you purchase it. They range from standard lettering brushes to textures and patterns. These brushes are great for getting started and some of them have even become my staple brushes!

DRY INK BRUSH

Dry Ink is a gorgeous ink style brush. It gives you a really natural looking brush stroke with an uneven texture. I love this brush for drawing and lettering and have used it in many of my designs for detail and outlines. | Procreate - Inking

SCRIPT BRUSH

Script is a beautiful lettering brush. It's pressure sensitive so it's great for lettering and calligraphy. I also really like it for drawing smooth outlines or accents like the ones in my Doodle Stamps Set. | Procreate - Calligraphy

GEL PEN BRUSH

Gel Pen is a brush that I don't really use for it's "intended purpose" of being an ink style brush. I love this brush as an eraser brush or a details brush. At its minimum size Gel Pen gets really small and is great for filling or erasing tiny spots. | Procreate - Inking

MY PROCREATE BRUSHES

The standard brushes in Procreate can keep you busy for a long time, but sometimes you need something else, something specific to your project. Making your own brushes can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. I tend to take attributes from brushes I like and mix them with the features I need to create the perfect brush.
Dot Brush - I love my dot brush and made it out of convenience. I found myself making dotted lines or borders a lot in my designs. This meant spending tons of time moving the dots around to get it perfect or copy and pasting the same section over and over to create a larger one. My dot brush allows you to make any shape you want in one swift motion. | Available on Etsy
Monoweight Outline Brush - My Monoweight Outline Brush is one that I love the look of. It's a rounded monoline brush with an empty middle. This means you can fill it in for a bordered look or leave it blank. When doing lettering with this brush the letters blend together really nicely. I also created a color changing version which is really fun. | Available on Etsy
Doodle Stamps Brush Set - I love adding little details to my designs when I post them to Instagram. I noticed I was re-drawing a lot of my doodle details over and over so I decided to make them into a stamps set. There are 40 stamps in the set and they are perfect for adding a little something to a design, creating a pattern, or just having fun! | Available on Etsy

PROCREATE BRUSHES FROM THE WEB

If you're like I was you don't even know where to start with downloading new brushes. There are endless blogs, websites and forums for finding them. I've downloaded my fair share of brushes but here are a few I find myself reaching for all the time.
Rad & Happy Monoweight Brush - This brush is in my top 5 most used brushes. It's the perfect rounded monoweight brush. I use it for outlining and for sketches and basically anything you can think of. If you download any basic brush it should be this one because it's perfect. | Available from Rad & Happy
Cartooning Monoweight Brush - This brush is what would happen if the Rad & Happy Monoweight Brush had a baby with the Dry Ink Brush. It's thick, it's mono weight and it's got that chalky / inky texture. This brush is great for lettering and drawing cartoon style images. | Available from Missy Meyer
IPL Round Calligraphy Brush - I am still getting the hand of calligraphy and this is one of my favorite brushes to use. It's a round calligraphy brush that glides really easily and makes your letters look really nice. A lot of the calligraphy brushes I've seen have a sharper edge so I like the rounded aspect of this one in particular. | Available from iPadLettering
Thanks for reading! Leave me a comment and let me know which Procreate brushes you love and think I should try. I am always ready to try a new brush or two!
